It inaugurated the world’s first transatlantic heavier-than-air service, and carried passengers and cargo around the globe in the 1930’s and 1940’s. The Boeing 314 Clipper is the quintessential flying boat. And in 1946, the California Clipper became the last Pan Am flying boat to be retired after clocking up more than one million flight miles. The clipper had an upper flight deck, a lower passenger cabin divided into five seating compartments, and a large lounge that converted into a dining room. One of the largest aircraft of the time, 12 were built for Pan American World Airways, three of which were sold to BOAC in 1941 before delivery. Directed by Ikko Ono. When the Boeing 314 flying boat made its appearance, it was the largest civil aircraft in service. It boasted separate men's and women's restrooms and changing rooms and even a cozy "bridal suite" in the rear. The installation of new Wright 1,500-horsepower Double Cyclone engines eliminated the lack of power that handicapped the XB-15. The Clipper used the wings and engine nacelles of the giant Boeing XB-15 bomber on the flying boat’s towering, whale-shaped body.
It’s what most people think of recalling the era when Foynes flourished as the hub of aviation activity between North America and Europe. Shown above is the California Clipper. Flying on a Boeing 314 Clipper "Flying hotel" was an apt description.
