Scientists at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) made the observations using the Heliospheric Imager (HI) in NRL's Sun Earth Connection Coronal and Heliospheric Investigation (SECCHI) telescope suite aboard NASA's Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO)-A … 2P/Encke orbits the sun every 1,200 days (3.29 years), coming as close as 0.34 AU and reaching as far as 4.09 AU from the sun. Comet Encke was traveling within the orbit of Mercury when a CME scrunched the tail and eventually tore it off the comet. Much like the flapping of a windsock displays the quick changes in wind’s speed and direction, called turbulence, comet tails can be used as probes of the solar wind – the constant flowing stream of material that leaves the sun in all directions. Both will have a western elongation of 15 degrees from the Sun. The diameter of comet Encke has been calculated, and it is ≡6.2±2.5 km.

Encke has been measured at less than 5 km across and its orbit has been studied for the last three hundred years. This means it has made far fewer orbits than Comet Encke and thus retains much more of the pristine material from which it formed.
Nowadays, it is rare for Comet Encke not to be observed at least once a year. Its nucleus measures approximately 2.98 miles (4.8 kilometers) in diameter, which is about a third of the size of the object hypothesized to have led to the demise of the dinosaurs. He continued working on the problem and, in May of 1819, Encke published details of his attempts to link the comets of 1805 and 1819 to a comet observed in 1795.

Encke, a short period comet of only 3.3 years, and while it is a fairly close comet to begin with, the next closest encounter will be July 11, 2030. Comet Encke is a periodic comet with the shortest orbit of any known comet in the solar system at 3.30 years.

Earth's position in space and the outgassing of Comet Encke are two of the factors that determine when, and if, this comet will become visible to the naked eye at some point in its path around the Sun.

It takes 3.30 years for Enke to orbit the sun once. No meteor shower or meteor stream is a threat to life on Earth because the debris is too small and too spread out. Asteroid collisions have also been considered to be a source of interplanetary dust, but there were few observational constraints on estimates of their relative contribution to the cloud as a whole, until the advent of space-based telescopes operating in the thermal infrared ( Table 50.1 ).

The first recorded discoverer of Encke's comet was actually Pierre Méchain in 1786 but it was not identified as a periodic comet until Encke computed its orbit in 1819. The orbital eccentricity is 0.848121, it is the degree at which Comet Encke orbits close to a circular (0) orbit as opposed to an elliptical (1) orbit. 2P/Encke is about 4.8 kilometers in diameter, making it larger than 99% of asteroids, comparable in size to the San Francisco Bay. Its orbit is highly elliptical. Since 1818, Comet Encke has been observed at every perihelion (closest approach to the Sun) except for one in 1944 at the height of World War II. The nucleus of 322P/SOHO is probably only 100–200 meters (330–660 ft) in diameter.
